Surf Expo is an exciting convention that comes to Orlando's convention center twice a year. Surf Expo features more than 2,400 booths of apparel and hardgoods and a full line-up of special events, including fashion shows, annual awards ceremonies, and skate and other boardsport demos. If you are an exhibitor at the Surf Expo please take some advice from someone who has done 10 of these shows in the last five years. There is a disturbing trend I am seeing among exhibitors and their use of models at the show. The Surf Expo used to be the largest most awaited show from a model's standpoint, that came to Orlando. It was not uncommon for models to be paid $500-$1000 a day at this show. However in the last few years many exhibitors have resorted to using 15 and 16 year old girls to model their bikinis. Kids of this age have no work ethic for the most part, don't know what it means to work hard, and have little concept of conversing with potential buyers in an articultae fashion. Why do Exhibitors use these type models? Because they work very cheaply. I really don't get it. I imagine every client takes a lot of pride in their product or services. Using such mediocre frontline representation is a terrible misjudgement. It's like the latest model of Mercedes Benz comes out and the company choses to market it solely on youtube. That's not a slam on youtube. I love youtube, but you get the point.
Models are a great source of advertising when you exhibit at a tradeshow and you should choose wisely when you pick them. Don't pick a 16 year old high school girl willing to skip school for $100 and some free swimwear. It will end up biting you. I have even heard of models splitting half way through the day because they were tired. I correct myself, 16 year olds who think they are models left early.
